Lessons - Influences

Dan talks about his influences

Marty Friedman

One of the most interesting guitarist since the 80s is Marty Friedman, former guitarist from Megadeth, One Nation Underground and Vixen (during his time in Hawaii).

Especially Marty Friedman's melodic lines and the use of different Asian scales and phrasing was/are big influences for me. Marty writes wonderful songs with (mostly) straightforward harmonies, where he lays haunting melodies.

Although the Marty Friedman style influenced for me a lot, I hear most people say that I stay unique. And that's very important to me!

Jason Becker

Jason Becker's whammy phrasing is amazing. It has caught my attention as soon I've heard it the first time - that must have been on Marty Friedman's "Dragon's Kiss" album, a wonderful record with some great songs, where you can hear and study these two excellent players together. With the whammy bar, Jason Becker produces vibes that are typical for Asian music; it supports and reinforce that vein. Jason's Asian style himself is influenced by Marty Friedman, who used that elements since a long time (e.g. in his band "One Nation Underground" on the album "Hawaii").

Steve Vai Steve Vai was one of the first Rock/Metal guitar player I listened accurately. The idea to play melodies on one string is just one musical gift which Steve Vai gave to me. Vibrato, expression (listen to Steve Vai's song "For the Love of God" as an example), unconventional melodies... are just a few points where Steve Vai is a never ending inspiration for me!

Other Guitarists

These great guitarists influenced my music, my play style and compositions:
George Lynch (Lynch Mob, Dokken), Joe Satriani...

Oriental & Oriental Music

Here's a nice example of traditional music from Persia. You hear a Persian flute, freely played, with some typical Oriental decorations in the melodies.

A Chinese pipa (a stringed instrument), played form Ling Ling Yu, a professional Chinese pipa player.

Listen to these different female singers from Uzbekistan and from Tuva.

Here a very nice melody from India.

I listen to all kind of traditional and authentic music...Indian sitar player, flute player form Turkey, singer from north Africa, traditional musicians from Macedonia and other Balkan countries and so on. Open your mind!
